Carver Jones Market

For some time the citizens of Fairfield, Alabama and surrounding areas have been living in a food desert. On July 31, 2024, Carver Jones Market opened.

President and CEO, James Harris has over 30 years experience in the grocery industry.

The store is named after George Washington Carver and Frederick McKinley Jones. Both men were pioneers in their field. Carver in agriculture and Jones in mobile refrigeration.

I had the pleasure of picking up a few items while over that way. The store is small but expertly arranged and doesn't give a cluttered feeling. It was clean and employees were friendly and knowledgeable about where to find items. Prices were about what they'd be in most markets.

I don't know how to stitch video so I've provided the run time beside each one. Total=39 sec.

Entrance 11 second video.

Produce ,etc. 17 sec.

Meat, dairy, etc. 11 sec.

Mission Statement

The store has pharmacy hours listed on the door. Since I wasn't in the market for any pharmaceuticals, I didn't seek it out.

If I lived on the western side of town in the community, I would shop here again.

That's it. 🍐🍋🐔

Mobile Carnival Museum

Mobile, Alabama is the birthplace of Mardi Gras. It is the oldest official Carnival celebration in the United States, started by Frenchman Nicholas Langlois in 1703 when Mobile was the capital of Louisiana.

While attending a Family Reunion, I had the opportunity to visit The Mobile Carnival Museum. The exhibit is enormous. These are just a few snaps I captured.  If you'd like to see more, click here.

Entrance fee. (Senior citizenry has its perks. $6.00 as opposed to $8.00) 😉

More Mardi Gras Band memorabilia

One of the many Mardi Gras throws, doubloons are large coins, either plastic or metal, that are usually in the Mardi Gras colors. These coins portray the mystic society's emblem, name, and founding date on one side, and the theme and year of the parade and ball on the other side.

AFRICATOWN- Mobile ,Alabama

 This year's
Family Reunion took place in Mobile, AL.  It was my hope to see Africatown. I attended a screening and panel discussion at The Jazz Hall of Fame sometime ago.  It had me wanting to view this hidden gem of a page in American history in person.

What is Africatown? A group of Africans were illegally transported  to the U.S. on the ship, Clotilda in 1860 long after slavery had been banned in 1808.  In an effort to hide their crime slave owners tried to burn the Clotilda. Africatown was formed by survivors and their descendants.
